August 8, 2019 A Conversation with Entrepreneur Patricia Robinson

The third installment of the Entrepreneur Speaker Series––featuring CEO Patricia Robinson–– occurs Tuesday, Aug. 13, 6–7 p.m. in ATEC 200. The event is free and open to the public.

Robinson runs the Harrisburg-based EVOLVE Training and Development. During her presentation, “I’m Jumping In,” she will talk about the process of becoming an entrepreneur.

We recently spoke with her via email about her background and the material she will cover during her presentation.

Can you talk about the genesis for your company, EVOLVE?

PR: I started EVOLVE in 2016 as a professional and personal development coaching business. Because I believe we should be living and doing what we are passionate about it. Money shouldn't be the main reason why we do something but rather a byproduct of that decision. Our goal is to show individuals how to make their purpose their priority and live a more fulfilled life doing so.

What made you take the leap from dreamer to entrepreneur?

PR: I took the leap because I didn't want to live with regrets. I had a passion in the pit of my stomach that I had to explore. I had to make my purpose my priority and I couldn't allow fear or doubts to stop me from trying. I knew the time was now. I live by two mottos:

  • “It's necessary, it's needed and the time is now.”
  • “If you continue to avoid opportunity, opportunity will continue to avoid you.”

What were some of the obstacles (internal and external) that you had to overcome?

PR: There are so many challenges when you decide to start a business… first, you deal with your own self-doubt. This is the biggest hurdle we face because there is no way you can overcome any external fears if you can't manage those internal fears. I have to challenge myself each day to push my limits out just a little bit further. The key is to take baby steps and celebrate each win. I had to learn that my services are not for everyone and it's okay... rejection is not personal.

How do you stay focused/fresh once you start your business?

PR: I remember my WHY, why I do it. That is what gives me energy to keep going even when... and there will always be a when, such as when you don't get that contract, when people don't show up, when the bills are due... I remember my why and I get refocused, re-energized and plan my next move.

What are some of the things that you will talk about during your “I’m Jumping In” presentation?

PR: You can't wait for someone to invite you in; you can't wait for the right moment, time or person to give you permission. Your time is NOW. LEAP!
