February 4, 2013 Alumnus Chad Ramsey pays it forward

The tale of Central Penn alumnus Chad Ramsey exemplifies that of an exemplary knight. Ramsey is a 2002 graduate and a member of the first class to graduate from Central Penn College’s four-year program. Currently, he is president and founder of Professional Gasfield Incorporated. His company is specifically involved in the handling and logistics of several oil and gas field products.

During his time at Central Penn, Ramsey was a business administration major. According to Ramsey, two of the most influential and impacting professors he had were Professor Lynn Shuster and former Professor Steve Shoemaker, who is now the systems specialist in the information technology department. Ramsey believed that Shoemaker brought a sense of reality into the classroom.

“One of the things I remember about Professor Shoemaker’s class was a project in his entrepreneurship and small business course,” says Ramsey. “I remember the class split into multiple teams and we had to come up with our own little business. My team came up with a little coffee and donut shop. At the time, we were providing a service that no one else could provide. My group members rallied to the call and traveled all the way to the nearest Krispy Kreme in Baltimore for the donuts and I brought in excess amounts of coffee. The way the team responded to the demand showed me that going into serious business was the path for me. I was motivated by that hands-on experience.”

With his business, Ramsey also explained how several pieces of knowledge he gained from Central Penn were reinforced in the field. It was this experience that made him further appreciate attending this institution.

“Embarking upon the path of starting my own business with all the risks it entails, I realized I was a very small fish in a huge pond,” explains Ramsey. “I was competing with companies that had seemingly endless budgets, so it looked like an increasingly uphill battle. After much contemplation, I fell back on another bit of advice I learned from Central Penn. I remembered that owning your own business and making it thrive is just like running a race. You never want to look at your opposition because it’ll only slow you down and cost you your individual tempo; especially if you’re ahead of the competition. I mean, if you need to, the customers will always tell you what the competition’s doing, but my primary goal was to make sure the service we were providing did the work for us. We just needed to concentrate on what we were doing and do it right and increasingly get better.”

Ramsey’s primary motivator is seeing his employees smile. Knowing that he is relied and depended on for work, keeps him motivated to do his part. The motivation however, does not stop there. He pays the motivation forward to current Central Penn students, by guest lecturing in classes to let the students know that they can and will use the education they gain from this institution to empower them and pave new roads toward their future.
