August 2, 2018 Hardboiled Saturdays Film Series

Looking for a way to beat the summer doldrums? Stop by the Lancaster library this weekend for the start of “Hardboiled Saturdays,” a film series hosted by Chris Wagenseller, adjunct professor at Central Penn College.

Each Saturday afternoon in August, Wagenseller will trace the evolution of American crime cinema from the 1940s to 2000s. Viewers can expect lots of detectives, double-crosses and dark motives throughout “Hardboiled Saturdays.”

Leading off the series this Saturday is 1941’s The Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart as detective Sam Spade. Wagenseller will give a short introductory talk at 1 p.m., with the movie screening at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Auditorium at the Lancaster Public Library. There also will be a discussion immediately following the film.

Here is the full series schedule, including the film’s title, director and year:

  • Aug. 4 – The Maltese Falcon (John Huston, 1941)
  • Aug. 11 – Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia (Sam Peckinpah, 1974)
  • Aug. 18 – Body Heat (Lawrence Kasdan, 1981)
  • Aug. 25 – Brick (Rian Johnson, 2005)

If you’re a fan of TV shows, such as True Crime and Fargo, “Hardboiled Saturdays” is a great way to start your weekend. All showings begin at 1 p.m. at the Lancaster library, which is located at 125 North Duke Street. Note: With the exception of The Maltese Falcon, all the movies are R-rated.
