Lancaster Center students reach out to children in Honduras for events planning project

Summerdale, PA Students from the Media Events Planning class at Central Pennsylvania College Lancaster are aggressively working on a school project to make a difference in the lives of suffering children from Honduras. The culmination of their efforts will be a "Family Fun Fundraiser" for Casa Corazon, a Mountville based non-profit group that provides medical supplies and humanitarian relief to children in remote villages in Honduras. The event will be held on Saturday, March 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the One-eighty youth center, 1805 Olde Homestead Lane (Greenfield Industrial Business Park), Lancaster.

The Media Events Planning class members have enthusiastically donated their class time and personal time to achieve their goal of planning the entire event which will feature crafts, activities, games, snacks, door prizes, and entertainment for children of all ages. There also will be a special visit from Duke the Dragon and the Princess of Dutch Wonderland. Tickets for the event cost $5.

In addition to planning the fundraiser, students acquired donations from a wide variety of local companies and organizations including Durawood Products, the event's primary sponsor.

"By providing my students with a real-life project, they were able to expand their horizons and see the needs of children worldwide while enhancing their educational growth," said Professor Erika Wilkinson.

"It was very rewarding to directly apply the lessons learned in class to such a worthwhile cause," said student Jenis Gutierrez - a communications major at the college. "We learned to work together as a team and push ourselves beyond our comfort zones," he added.

For more information about the class project to benefit Casa Corazon, contact Professor Erika Wilkinson at 717-892-3589 . Media are invited and encouraged to attend the fundraiser.
