Leadership Programming

Central Penn is dedicated to providing access to Leadership Development for all students. A variety of offerings are available on a regular or short-term basis for students to become involved.

Common Hour
Central Penn provides the unique opportunity for College students to develop leadership skills and to gain perspective on the various spiritual and cultural aspects of life through Common Hour events. Every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. a special presentation is available for the campus community. These events may range from well-known speakers to successful graduates, musicians, artists, and community leaders.

All students are encouraged to attend, but those taking Oral Communications and students accepted into the Leadership Honor Academy are required to attend the Common Hour events. The Common Hour schedule is noted in the calendar and will be widely publicized each term.

Leadership Honor Academy (LHA)
Students with the desire to participate in a prestigious leadership opportunity and willing to go above and beyond are invited to consider applying for the Academy. Students can apply for acceptance into the program upon acceptance to Central Penn or prior to earning 80 credits. Admission into the Academy is competitive and considers the person as a whole. While grades are important, so, too, are demonstrated leadership, commitment, integrity, and the will to succeed. Application to the Academy is open to all full-time students and will require an interview, letters of reference, and a self evaluation.

Cadets will participate in a series of leadership activities, including Common Hour events, Leadership Series, the Student Leadership Training Institute (SLTI), community service activities, and physical training, and will serve as ambassadors or the ‘eyes’ of the college. Cadets will be expected to model the Big Eight and serve as role models for the campus. Cadets will be involved in ceremonies, have special pinning or capping events, and will graduate with Leadership Honors. Cadets will also be expected to wear their Academy uniforms on Common Hour Wednesdays. For more information on the application process, call the Student Services office to set up an appointment with the Retention and Placement Coordinator.

Leadership Toolkit
A dynamic three-session workshop that enables students to develop their skills in creating agendas, taking and distributing meeting minutes, setting goals, running effective meetings, and building membership. The leadership toolkit is held during the fall term.

Peer Mediation
The Central Pennsylvania College Peer Mediation program provides training and mediation opportunities for students who wish to help resolve disputes involving students at Central Penn. An outgrowth of Central Penn’s Alternative Dispute Resolution courses, this program is available to all students who meet minimum academic and disciplinary criteria. A brief training course certifying the student as a Central Penn Peer Mediator is required for participation.

Peer Mentoring
Peer mentors guide incoming freshman students through their first few terms so they can successfully navigate questions as they arise. Mentors should complete at least two academic terms, be in good behavioral standing, complete an interview, and hold a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Student Leadership Training Institute (SLTI)
The Student Leadership Training Institute (SLTI) is a training program for student leaders and those students who are interested in leadership. The program is designed to enhance their development as effective leaders. The students will gain knowledge and skills that will help them in all spheres of their lives, in college as well as in their careers and home lives. The leadership institute runs during the spring term.
