Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is all about taking information that is unfamiliar to students, organizing that information, and presenting it in a way that makes it accessible to them. With so much information readily available, it is difficult for any student to know what is important and what is not. Teaching puts that into perspective by selecting the important pieces, organizing those pieces into a logical structure, and breaking it down into manageable segments.

Teaching is about patience, and understanding that learning takes time and practice. Athletes, artists and academicians, among others, invest years in learning their craft. Learning any new information is no less labor-intensive or time-consuming. Teachers must allow students the time and space to perfect the craft of learning. Teaching also is about providing students with positive reinforcement in their efforts to demonstrate their understanding of the material.

Bio

Before coming to Central Penn College, Professor Tannenbaum worked as a librarian, a product manager at software development company, and a strategic market analyst for an IT consulting firm.

As the director of the Ohio County Public Library in West Virginia, Tannenbaum planned and managed the migration from a mainframe system to a microcomputer-based network. After repeating that process for another public library, he went to work with the library automation software developer. As a product manager, he worked with both librarians and programmers in the design and development of library software.

In his career as strategic market analyst, Tannenbaum researched and wrote about the application service provider market for companies, such as IBM, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard. He came to Central Penn in 2002 and earned his doctor of business administration from Northcentral University in 2017.
