Teaching Philosophy

I enjoy having a career that allows me to build professional working relationships with college students and assist them achieve their educational and life goals. Taking motivated students and helping them become the best they can be is my goal.

In my courses, I am committed to teaching and facilitating in a manner that assures that each student has the opportunity to grasp the course information. I believe the key to education is not to necessarily hand the information to students but rather help and encourage them to think, reason and find the information on their own. As author Lloyd Alexander once said, “In some cases, we learn more by looking for the answer to a question than we do from learning the answer itself.”

Bio

In 1988 when he was a staff radiologic technologist, Kevin Otto taught his first class, Principles of Radiographic Exposure, at Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa. He taught additional radiology courses when he was hired by that program as its clinical instructor in 1989.

In 1996, when Polyclinic and Harrisburg Hospitals merged to form Pinnacle Health, he became the program’s director and assumed teaching other courses as well as the administrative duties that come with directing a program.

In 2004, he became program director for the School of Radiologic Technology at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa. Both Holy Spirit and Pinnacle Health were affiliated with Harrisburg Area Community College, which allowed him the opportunity to teach the college’s Radiation Physics course starting in 1992.

In 2013, he began his academic career here at Central Penn College. In addition to developing programs in Healthcare Management and Radiology Sciences, he teaches Anatomy & Physiology.

A native of central Pennsylvania, Otto is a graduate of Boiling Springs High School. He attended Central Penn College and earned a degree in legal assisting. He worked in the legal and real estate division of a national retail corporation. During this time, he volunteered with emergency medical services and eventually decided to follow his passion, health care, and went into radiologic technology.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend 25 years working for hospital-based radiologic programs, where I was not only able to administer the programs and teach, but was also able to still have direct patient contact,” he says. “These experiences also provided the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed for my current position with Central Penn College.”

He is married and has two children. In his free time, he and his wife enjoy attending their children's sporting events, taking vacations to Rehoboth Beach and visiting Disney World.
