Faculty Who Care

Kimberly Tanish, OTD, OTR/L
Program Director, Occupational Therapy Assistant

Academic Bio

I received by training in occupational therapy from Saint Francis University and graduated with my Masters degree in 2009. After a few years of practice, I decided to continue my education and enrolled in Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah. I graduated with my post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy in 2015. My clinical expertise is with the geriatric population. I fell in love with treating that age group from my first encounter. My areas of expertise include seating and positioning and dementia. I practiced for several years in a skilled nursing facility and home health settings in Harrisburg. My career then led me to becoming the director of rehabilitation at one skilled nursing facility and then eventually transitioning to managing three skilled nursing facilities in Harrisburg, Camp Hill, and Gettysburg. I continue to practice on an as needed basis at skilled nursing facilities in Harrisburg, Carlisle, and Gettysburg and within the home health setting in the Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg areas.

Personal Bio

I was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania. I am the youngest of four and have a very big extended family! If you have ever seen the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", then you have a good picture of what family gatherings and holidays look like in my home! (We are Polish, not Greek and I own my heritage!) Loud does not even begin to describe it. Working out and shopping are my two favorite hobbies. I hate to run but love to do mud runs or obstacle course races. I have a self admitted problem with buying shoes. One of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family and friends and I try to that as much as time allows. I have a 13 year old Italian greyhound rescue who is the best dog that ever! I also have a strange ability to remember song lyrics and movie quotes and will use them in conversation on a regular basis! I love to laugh and have a good time!

What are you most passionate about?

My passion is to help people. I want to know that I have made a difference in someones life.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that you learn the most through hands-on learning. I try to incorporate a hands-on component into all of my material. The field of occupational therapy is my passion and I want to share that passion with my students. I strive to provide real life examples of what the text book teaches in order to enhance learning. Humor in the classroom is vitally important to how I teach my material.
