Weather-related information for Students, Faculty and Staff

For Students

WHEN ARE DECISIONS MADE?

  • A Virtual Learning day will be announced by 6:00 a.m. If the college will close early and implement Blackboard for afternoon and/or evening classes, this notification will be made by 3 p.m.

HOW ARE WEATHER-RELATED SCHEDULE CHANGES AND/OR EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS MADE?

  • Central Penn makes weather-related schedule changes and emergency announcements through the CP Alert notification system for day and evening classes. Students may register by visiting My.CentralPenn.edu and selecting the “CP Alert” button. Central Penn also broadcasts schedule changes on local television and radio stations.

WHAT DOES “VIRTUAL LEARNING” MEAN FOR ME?

  • Classes are held virtually for face-to-face courses synchronously on Blackboard at their scheduled times. Students have the responsibility to log onto their courses to attend class and to complete the posted work for each class. Classes are not canceled and students must access their coursework online.
  • For online courses, timelines and due dates are not altered.

WHAT IF CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AND I CANNOT GET IN?

  • Contact your professor(s) via email or phone as soon as possible.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?

  • Due to conditions on campus, students are encouraged to wear safe, comfortable footwear during any inclement weather. Footwear that provides traction on snowy and potentially icy walkways is ideal. If you notice an area that needs particular attention, please notify Public Safety immediately.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ACTIVITIES?

  • If an early dismissal is in place, the club advisor will make a decision regarding the planned activity. If the college declares operation on Blackboard, all activities are canceled.

For Faculty and Staff

WHEN ARE DECISIONS MADE?

  • A Virtual Learning day will be announced by 6:00 a.m. If the college will close early and implement Blackboard for afternoon or evening classes, this notification will be made by 3 p.m.

HOW ARE WEATHER-RELATED SCHEDULE CHANGES AND/OR EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS MADE?

  • Central Penn makes weather announcements through the CP Alert notification system for day and evening classes. Students, faculty and staff may register by visiting My.CentralPenn.edu and selecting the “CP Alert” button. Central Penn also broadcasts schedule changes on local television and radio stations.

WHAT DOES “VIRTUAL LEARNING” MEAN FOR ME?

  • Only personnel whose jobs have been classified as “essential” and who can reach campus safely are expected to report. Employees who have the ability to work from home are expected to do so.
  • Facilities and Public Safety are the only employees classified as essential personnel. Those department heads will communicate with their employees to determine if and when they need to report to work.
  • Staff and faculty regularly scheduled to work that day will be paid for the day as they can work remotely. There will be no need to enter PTO. To the extent there is advance notice of a weather-related schedule change and/or emergency announcement, you can plan to take work home and your supervisor should provide further guidance. However, if unable to work from home, do not report to campus.
  • If you pre-planned PTO as part of vacation or medical leave that occurs on a snow day, you are expected to use that PTO day – it will not be reinstated.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR WEATHER-RELATED SCHEDULE CHANGES AND/OR EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS?

  • If the weather service is calling for the chance of bad weather, it would be appropriate to take work home in preparation.
  • It is appropriate for faculty to have emergency lesson plans in place that can be easily modified for online learning.

WHAT IF CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AND I CANNOT GET IN?

  • Contact your supervisor as soon as possible, especially if a class must be covered. Staff and full-time faculty will be expected to use PTO.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ACTIVITIES?

  • If an early dismissal is in place, the club advisor will make a decision regarding the planned activity. If the college declares operation on Blackboard, all activities are canceled.
