Central Penn College Dental Assisting Student Gives Veterans a Reason to Smile

Central Penn College dental assisting students volunteer for Veteran dental health.

Recently, Central Penn College dental assisting student Lexi put her skills—and her heart—into action by volunteering at the annual Time to Smile event, a community initiative dedicated to providing free dental care to local veterans and active-duty service members.

Hosted at the Dental Specialty Center and supported by organizations including Verber Dental Group, Alfano Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pennsylvania Center for Periodontology, Cumberland Valley Endodontics, and Central Penn College’s own Dental Assisting and EFDA programs, the event delivered more than $47,000–$50,000 in free dental services to those who have bravely served our country.

For Lexi, participating was more than an educational experience—it was an opportunity to give back.

A Student Who Leads With Heart

Lexi spent the day assisting providers and ensuring veterans received high-quality, compassionate care. Her dedication exemplifies what it means to be a Central Penn College student: skilled, service-minded, and committed to strengthening the community.

“We are so proud of Lexi for volunteering her time and skills,” said Professor Ann Hoffman. “Her willingness to serve our community and support those who’ve served our country is truly inspiring.”

Her involvement not only helped the event run smoothly but also showcased the talent and professionalism within Central Penn College’s growing dental programs.

A Community United in Service

The Time to Smile event has become a cherished annual tradition—one that continues to change lives, restore confidence, and bring brighter smiles to local heroes. Providers, volunteers, and sponsors come together year after year to expand access to essential dental care. This year was no exception.

Under the leadership of experts like Dr. Pete Alfano, Jodie Eckenrode, Sandra Longenberger, and Kara Urland, the event offered transformative services and heartfelt support.

Special appreciation was shared for Col. Janele Gibson Graziano and Capt. John Huyser, Army dentists who exemplify service in every sense. State leaders including Senator Patty Kim and Representative Thomas Kutz also helped connect veterans with needed care.

Pride in Our Dental Programs—and Our Dental Students

Central Penn College’s Dental Assisting and EFDA students play an essential role in events like these, providing hands-on support that directly impacts the community. Their involvement reflects the real-world training and emphasis on community engagement built into our curriculum.

We’re incredibly grateful for Lexi and all our students who step up to serve others. Their dedication helps strengthen not only our programs, but the communities we proudly support.

Thank you, Lexi, for representing Central Penn College with excellence, compassion, and Knight pride. Keep shining—you’re already making a difference.
