WHAT DOES “BLACKBOARD DAY” MEAN FOR ME?

  • Classes are held on Blackboard and students have the responsibility to complete the posted work for each class. Assignments for day classes should be posted by noon and assignments for evening classes should be posted by 6 p.m. Classes are not cancelled and students must access their coursework online.

WHAT IF CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AND I CANNOT GET IN?

  • Contact your professor(s) via email or phone as soon as possible.

WHEN ARE DECISIONS MADE?

  • A delayed opening or Blackboard day will be announced by 5:45 a.m. If a delay is upgraded to a Blackboard day the announcement will occur by 7 a.m. If the college will close early and implement Blackboard for afternoon and/or evening classes, this notification will be made by 3 p.m.

HOW ARE SNOW SCHEDULES ANNOUNCED?

  • Central Penn makes weather announcements through the CP Alert notification system. Students may register by visiting My.CentralPenn.edu and selecting the “CP Alert” button. Central Penn also broadcasts schedule changes on local television and radio stations.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?

  • Due to conditions on campus, students are encouraged to wear safe, comfortable footwear during any inclement weather. Footwear that provides traction on snowy and potentially icy walkways is ideal. If you notice an area that needs particular attention, please notify Public Safety immediately.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ACTIVITIES?

  • If a delayed opening or early dismissal is in place, the club advisor will make a decision regarding the planned activity. If the college declares operation on Blackboard, all activities are cancelled.

WHAT DOES “BLACKBOARD DAY” MEAN FOR ME?

  • Only personnel whose jobs have been classified as “essential” and who can reach campus safely are expected to report. Employees who have the ability to work from home are encouraged to do so.
  • Facilities and Public Safety are the only employees classified as essential personnel. Those department heads will communicate with their employees to determine if and when they need to report to work.
  • For faculty members: an assignment equivalent to the number of class hours for the day must be posted to Blackboard for any class impacted by the closing of campus. Instructors for day classes must post their assignment(s) by 12 p.m. on the day the college is operating under a Blackboard Day. Instructors for evening courses must post their assignments by 6 p.m. on the day the college is operating under a Blackboard day. When severe weather is predicted, instructors should email a reminder to their students concerning Blackboard policies and when assignments will be posted in the event of a delay or closing.
  • Staff and faculty regularly scheduled to work that day will be paid for the day.  There will be no need to enter PTO.  Because you are being paid, you should check email throughout the day.  Anyone able to do work from home should do so if their work is approaching deadline or time sensitive, as determined by your supervisor.  To the extent there is advance notice of a snow event, you can plan to take work home and your supervisor should provide further guidance.  However, if unable to work from home, do not report to campus.
  • If you pre-planned PTO as part of vacation or medical leave that occurs on a snow day, you are expected to use that PTO day – it will not be reinstated. Similarly, if you choose to call off on a day where we experience a delay or early closure, you are expected to use 8 hours of PTO.

HOW DO I PREPARE BEFOREHAND FOR SNOW MODIFICATIONS?

  • If the weather service is calling for the chance of bad weather, it would be appropriate to take work home in preparation.
  • It is appropriate for faculty to have emergency lesson plans in place that can be easily modified for online learning.

WHAT IF CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AND I CANNOT GET IN?

  • Contact your supervisor as soon as possible, especially if a class must be covered.  Staff and full-time faculty will be expected to use PTO.
